Beaing and Time by Martin Heidegger
Arwork by Yanj Qifan
The book I chose is Heidegger's important philosophical work Being and Time. The book explores the core question of "being." Here are three chapters I chose to depict and a display of what I depicted:
Drawing 1: The Mystery of “being”
The Mystery of “Being”
This is a picture I conjured up after reading the introduction to Being and Time, ‘INTRODUCTION: The Exposition of the Question of the Meaning of Being’. It symbolizes the confusion of contemplation in the face of the mystery of being and the unknown abyss.
In the introduction, Heidegger clearly states the goal of the book—to explore the meaning of “being”. He proposes that philosophy has focused on existence since ancient times, but has forgotten the fundamental question of “being” and even equated it with material things. Heidegger emphasizes that by analyzing the way in which people exist (i.e., being, Dasein), the depth of the problem of existence can be revealed anew.
Because when I talk about the problem of existence, I am reminded of the content of the Cthulhu myth, so I decided to depict a person standing on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Use large blank spaces to depict the unknown, and use the black cliff to represent existence.
Drawing 2: The Power of The “Eye of Agamotto”
The power of The “Eye of Agamotto”
After reading DIVISION TWO: Dasein and Temporality of Being and Time, I was naturally reminded of the Marvel Universe.
In this chapter, Heidegger discusses temporality as the essence of “Dasein”. He believes that the temporality of “Dasein” is revealed through the unity of the past, present, and future, and that it is especially revealed through the consciousness of “dying while alive” in its true way of being. This concept shows that existence and time are inseparable, and temporality is the key to understanding existence.
This reminds me of the scene in the movie when Doctor Strange first used the Time Stone, when he used it on the apple he left behind.
Drawing 3: Lotus Born From Every Step
Lotus Born From Every Step
The image that came to mind after reading the first chapter of the second essay, Sein zum Tode. It symbolizes the inevitability of death and the meaning of life revealed through death.
This is one of the most central and well-known chapters in the entire book. According to Heidegger, death is the most extreme possibility of being, reminding us to face our unique existence. The inevitability of death forces us to rethink our way of life and thus achieve true authentic existence.
This reminds me of the Buddhist saying that “lotuses grow from every step”. In Buddhism, the lotus represents the Buddha nature and the goodness in human nature. So I drew a scene of a silhouette walking in the twilight, with the darkness ahead of it blurred, but the road beneath its feet is paved with light and lotuses are growing.
Finally, I want to express my heartfelt thanks for recommending such a wonderful selection of books. Your suggestions have been incredibly useful and have greatly enriched my learning experience. I truly appreciate your guidance and support.
