The Image of the City by Kevin A. Lynch

Landmarks in different cities――From people's views, City landmarkers are point-like reference objects, "They are the observer's external observation reference points, and may be simple ignorant elements that vary widely in scale." As a landmark, it is often used as a clue to determine identity and structure in the formation of city images. When a certain artificial object in a city is recognized as a city landmark, this sign has become a spatial structure system. It and other elements "constitute an aggregate in regular interaction or interdependence." In addition, the most important feature of urban landmarks is that they are "unique in some respects" and are "unforgettable" in the entire environment. What I did is to find different landmarks in different cities, When standing on the street, it is very easy to see the unique landmarks.
The image of the city-the visual category of the cites in space
Visual category: Refers to features that can increase the range of sight and permeability in fact or symbolically. Including transparency; overlap; as well as street view and panoramic view, which can increase the depth of the landscape; clearly express and vividly illustrate the elements of the space; the concave curvature can reveal distant objects; and the clues to an invisible element. All these related characteristics help people grasp the huge and complex whole by improving the effectiveness of the landscape, or improving its ability to penetrate and decompose.I think that the visual spatial embodiment of a city is realized through the space of the skyline. Every city has its own unique skyline, which constitutes a unique visual experience of the city.
Different economic classes in the city (Take an example of Beijing,China)
People's perception of the city has common image features:
1. The urban landscape features, vegetation or water surface, are often happily concerned and talked about;
2. Different areas of the economic class of the society will also be talked about;
3. The material landscape embodies the symbolic way of the passage of time. People often describe the contrasting things in the urban landscape, such as space contrast, status contrast, function contrast, and the relative age, cleanliness or topography, elements and Its characteristics become clear in this overall environment. The conclusion drawn: People can adapt to the environment and extract the structure and personality of the environment from the materials around them.
